We’ve compiled 4 hashtags-gone-wrong by brands in 2014 which leads us to wonder if a “Hashtag 101″ tutorial or at least a #hashcat on some brand best practices is in order.
- In response to Janay Palmer Rice’s decision to stay with NFL player Ray Rice, the hashtag #WhyIStayed trended on Twitter. DiGiorno Pizza forgot the first rule of Hashtags - check out the story and joined the conversation, tweeting “#WhyIStayed You had pizza.”
- Several brands successfully jumped on the Apple #bendgate trending conversation, but LG might have missed the mark by tweeting from the LG France account that “Our smartphones don’t bend, they are naturally curved ;)” …from an iPhone.
- McDonald’s launches it’s refreshed mascot for social media using the hashtag #RonaldMcDonald. Twitter joined in, bashing the brand, the clown, and the restaurant chain’s food.
- Baked goods company, Entenmann’s related the #notguilty hashtag to eating it’s baked goods, not realizing it referred to the Casey Anthony trial.
