Second Screen #CMAawards

Last week’s Country Music Awards on ABC were watched by over 16 million people, according to Zap2It.com and Nielsen, and they were apparently all watching the show with a laptop, tablet or phone in their hands with Twitter open, because there were over 400,000 tweets with the hashtag #CMAawards in the past 24 hours.

178,000 people (OK, not all 16 Million, but it’s still a LOT) contributed to the Twitter stream before, during and after the show, hosted again this year by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, for an astounding 1.97 Billion (that’s Billion with a B) timeline deliveries and a reach of over 300 million.

Talk about bang for the buck! The show’s reach was multiplied by 18 times over the eyeballs watching live. Think about that for a minute. The dollars spent on production, not to mention marketing, were stretched farther than they could ever have been by a TV broadcast alone. And that’s not even counting the web presence the Awards show had.

There was content broadcast on Twitter last night, like behind-the-scenes, red carpet & backstage photos, that the TV audience would not have been privy to any other way. It all served to enhance the experience for fans, and to reach non-fans as well. It was hard to miss the tweets, even if you weren’t following the hashtag. And if you were? The stream was flying by so fast it was impossible to read. Pretty amazing.
