Hashtags & TV

Have you ever sat and watched a TV show and wished, “if only I could share this moment with my friends?” Well now you can, even if they’re not in the same room with you, on Twitter, by using a Hashtag.

Everyone from established groups to ordinary Twitter users are using Hashtags to find communities of shared interest in broadcast media, or in other words, people who like the same shows. Curious how many people like Breaking Bad, New Girl, The Walking Dead, or The Voice? Check out #BreakingBad, #NewGirl, WalkingDead and #TheVoice and you’ll soon see.

Follow #Glee or #Gleek, for example, to see the depth of fandom for the show and the talent involved in making it. The show has a super loyal following of viewers and it turns out they love to tweet about it, too. It doesn’t hurt that Glee often casts celebrities, because that leads to many more timeline impressions, as anyone who mentions @LadyGaga clearly knows.

#TCMParty is for those Classic Movie buffs out there who love the Turner Classic Channel, and they are fiercely loyal to their hashtag. Since there’s always something great on TCM, the tweets keep rolling in a steady stream. And during a movie, you get live tweets with commentary on the film as well as behind-the-scenes info from those in the know.

ABC’s #Scandal takes TV hashtagging up a notch by broadcasting tweets from fans as the show airs. Other shows have listed the hashtag in the bottom corner of the screen to help prompt viewers to engage on Twitter, but ABC is using the Hashtag #Scandal to track tweets and then add them across the bottom of the screen during the show. Very nearly in real time. How’d you like to get your tweet seen by the millions watching this prime-time show starring Kerry Washington? Use the Hashtag.
